Blocked drain? Here's what to try before you call a plumber
Blocked drains have impeccably bad timing. Here's what you can safely try yourself, what to never do, and when to wave the white flag and call in the camera and jetter.
A blocked drain has an uncanny sense of timing. It will never strike on a quiet Tuesday - only the night before guests arrive, or halfway through the washing up. The silver lining: a few you can clear yourself before calling a plumber armed with a camera and a very enthusiastic hose.
Try these safe fixes first
1. A hot water flush
For a sluggish kitchen sink, a kettle of hot (not boiling) water can help shift grease and soap build-up. Keep it just-hot on PVC or older fittings, though - boiling water and plastic pipes get along about as well as cats and baths.
2. Clear the obvious
Pull the plug or waste cover and fish out any hair, food scraps or mystery gunk. A surprising number of "blockages" are just a clogged plug hole having a dramatic moment.
3. Give it a plunge
A good old cup plunger creates pressure that can dislodge a blockage near the drain. Cover the overflow with a wet cloth first, then plunge like you mean it - a dozen firm pumps.
4. Baking soda and vinegar
Half a cup of baking soda, half a cup of white vinegar, let it fizz like a tiny science-fair volcano for 15 minutes, then flush with warm water. Great for mild build-up, and not a harsh chemical in sight.
What to avoid
- Harsh chemical drain cleaners. They can damage pipes and seals, rarely fix the real cause, and make the line thoroughly unpleasant for whoever works on it next (hi, that's us).
- Forcing it. Jamming a coat hanger or broom handle down the pipe is a great way to turn a cheap job into an expensive one. Resist the urge.
- Hoping it fixes itself. A blockage that keeps coming back is trying to tell you something. Listen to the drain.
Warning signs it's time to call a plumber
Pick up the phone if you notice:
- More than one fixture draining slowly at once (often a main-line issue)
- Gurgling noises from drains or the toilet (that's not it saying hello)
- Water backing up when you flush or run the washing machine
- Bad smells drifting from the drain or the yard
- A blockage that keeps staging a comeback after you clear it
What we do differently
Instead of guessing, we send a CCTV camera down the line to see exactly what - and where - the problem is: tree roots, grease, scale or a collapsed pipe. Then we clear it with high-pressure water jetting, which scrubs the full width of the pipe rather than just poking a hole through the middle. On the Sunshine Coast the usual villain is tree roots sneaking into older pipes, and the camera footage tells us whether a quick clear-and-monitor will do or a section needs repair.

Keeping your drains happy
Most blockages are preventable with a few habits: never pour fat or oil down the sink (it sets like candle wax), use a sink strainer for food scraps, and only flush the three P's - pee, poo and paper. Despite the confident marketing, "flushable" wipes are about as flushable as a house brick.
