Good to know

Understanding hot water systems

Hot water is usually the single biggest energy user in a Sunshine Coast home, so the system you choose affects both your comfort and your power bill. Electric storage tanks are the cheapest to install, while heat pumps and solar cost more up front but slash running costs over time - a real advantage in our climate. We match the system to your household size, your roof and your existing setup.

Most tanks last eight to twelve years. Once a tank is leaking from the body itself - not just a valve - replacement is the only real fix, because a leaking tank never gets better. Since we carry common sizes on the van, we can usually swap a failed unit the same day rather than leaving you cold for a week waiting on parts.

Pro tips

Tips from our hot water team

A few things our plumbers wish every homeowner knew.

Know where your isolation valve is

If the tank starts leaking, shutting the cold-water isolation valve on top of the unit stops it fast. Find it before you ever need it.

Do not ignore a dripping relief valve

A pressure-relief valve that constantly weeps usually means it needs replacing, or your mains pressure is too high. Cheap to fix now, expensive to ignore.

Right-size the tank

Undersized tanks run out; oversized ones waste power keeping water hot that you never use. As a rough guide, allow about 50 litres per person for an electric storage tank.

Flush it occasionally

Sediment build-up shortens a tank's life and cuts its efficiency. Ask us to check the anode and flush the tank during a service.

FAQs

Questions about hot water systems

My hot water died overnight - can you come today?

Usually yes. We carry common tank sizes on the van, so most straight-swap replacements are completed the same day. Call us first thing and we'll let you know a time.

Should I repair or replace my hot water system?

If the tank itself has failed or the unit is well past ten years, replacement is normally the better spend. If it's a valve, element or thermostat, a repair often makes sense. We'll give you an honest recommendation on site.

What type of system should I choose?

It depends on your household size, existing connections and whether you have solar. We install electric, solar and heat pump systems and will talk you through running costs before you decide.
