No hot water? 7 common causes and how to fix them

Cold shower ambush? Before you declare war on your hot water system, run through these seven common causes - a few you can fix yourself, the rest we'll happily sort.

Few things build character like stepping into the shower, turning the tap with total confidence, and being hit with water cold enough to make a penguin flinch. The good news: most hot water dramas come down to a handful of usual suspects - and a few you can sort yourself before calling in the cavalry. Here are the seven we see most across the Sunshine Coast.

1. A tripped switch (the innocent-looking culprit)

Nine times out of ten, the villain is sitting quietly in your switchboard pretending it did nothing wrong. A tripped breaker or a hot water isolation switch flicked to "off" stops the system heating. Flick it back on and give the tank an hour or two to warm up. Yes, "turn it off and on again" works for plumbing too - we were doing it long before IT support made it famous. If it trips straight back, stop and call a licensed plumber or electrician, because something is genuinely faulting.

2. It clocks off overnight (off-peak tariff)

Lots of Queensland homes run hot water on a cheaper off-peak tariff that only heats overnight - basically your tank knocking off at tradie's hours. After a big day of showers and washing, you can run dry until the next cycle. If it happens often, your tank is probably too small for the household, and we can talk you through a bigger tank or a continuous-flow unit that never clocks off.

3. A tired element or thermostat

Inside an electric tank, an element does the heating and a thermostat calls the shots on temperature. When either gives up you get lukewarm water - the beige of shower temperatures - or water that goes cold the moment you relax. Both are common wear items and usually a quick repair.

4. A leaking or failed tank

Spotted a puddle under the unit? That's your hot water system quietly crying for help. Sadly, a leaking tank can't be talked off the ledge - once it has rusted through, it's retirement time. Turn off the water and power to the unit and give us a call, because a failed tank can cause water damage while you're deciding what to do.

5. Sediment build-up

Over the years minerals settle at the bottom of the tank. Too much, and you get less hot water from a harder-working system. If your tank sounds like it's making popcorn, that's sediment, not a snack - a service and flush can help, though on an older unit it's a hint it's nearing the end.

6. A faulty tempering or relief valve

A tempering valve blends hot and cold so your taps stay at a safe temperature; when it fails, water can come through too cool. A relief valve that drips non-stop is another usual offender. Both are cheap to replace and much nicer to deal with before they grow into a bigger job.

7. It has simply reached the end of its innings

Most tanks last around eight to twelve years - a solid innings. If yours is collecting the pension and still playing up, repeated repairs often cost more than they're worth. We carry common sizes on the van, so most straight swaps are done the same day.

When to call a plumber

If you've checked the switchboard and still have no hot water - or you can see a leak, hear something odd, or the unit's just old - it's time to get a licensed plumber out. We repair and replace electric, solar and heat pump systems from all major brands across the Sunshine Coast, with upfront pricing before we start. (Our golden retriever Borris supervises every job. He offers zero technical help, but excellent moral support.)
